Our lives revolve around our little furry friends. Our pets are part of the family, whether they be cats, dogs or something else. Sometimes these animals feel stress and anxiety or pain from arthritis or possibly from an injury of some sort. I actually had a dog (Marla, the Australian Shepherd) that was hit by a car and her hip was shattered. She limped on 3 legs for quite a while but eventually recovered completely except for the ability to have pups (the vet said her hip was damaged too much to allow a safe birth).
Both Marla and my best buddy, Oscar (yes he was a dachshund) have gone on to doggie heaven. My only wish was that I had known about CBD when these family members were going through their times of crisis. Oscar suffered from a leaky heart valve (common with dachshunds) and suffered from pain and difficulty breathing. He was a trooper and never complained. Based on what I have since learned about CBD, I am sure it would have helped him to suffer less. And for Marla, who recovered from being hit by a car, for sure would have been helped by CBD for her pain, inflammation and recovery time.
CBD is making huge headway in the veterinary world as veterinarians discover how effective CBD is for treating many pet ailments. Many CBD companies are producing products specifically formulated to provide pets with relief. Some of the things I would pay attention to is size and weight of the animal. While you cannot overdose on CBD, too much can make you sleepy. Keep in mind that pets metabolisms are very different from humans, so while all vertebrates ( our pets included) have an ECS (Endo-Cannabinoid System), their bodies assimilate oils and supplements differently than their human counterparts. So what works for you might not necessarily work for them. The same rules used for our own consumption should be used for our pets- start low and go slow. A general rule of thumb for dosage for pain is 1-5 mg. for every 10 lbs. of body weight, once every 8 hours. CBD has also been used to alleviate stress and help change bad habits. In those cases use similar dosage based on size but give it once or twice a day. And in every case, consult with your doctor or veterinarian before using any supplement.
After 17 years in our family, Oscar passed on March 24th, 2019. This posting is to honor his years of dedication, love and friendship to our family and friends. The highest praise that can be given to eulogize our departed pet is this: "He was a good dog". More on CBD products for humans and pets can be found here.
